CrueltyLeaks | INTERVIEW: Fermare Green Hill & the University of Milano Lockdown
A must read interview with members of Fermare Green Hill about their lab take-over last week!
Flesh and Blood issues 1-8 and 10 are now available at The Talon Conspiracy.
On June 29th, 1980, 120 members of NALL invaded the Babraham agricultural research center in England. Once inside, they split up to cover all of the facilities various labs and buildings, and began taking photographs and video of the experiments taking place inside. When police arrived many cameras were confiscated, but video and still images made their way into several major media outlets, meaning that millions of people across England were introduced to the reality of vivisection after just a single action. This is a wonderful example of “propaganda by the deed,” and proof that direct action can be a powerful tool for education.
Watch this. It is in Italian, but just watch it. The full edit from the Italian lab take over this week. The world of vivisection is outraged. Seems like something they should have to worry about more often.
I will post pretty much anything I can find related to NALL, but although this ad may not seem that compelling, think about it’s age. 30 years ago there were people who recognized the need for intelligent, organized direct action. In fact, they felt then that it was “long over-due!” NALL acted when most others were just talking, and their analysis of animal abuse considered issues of class, race, and gender. They were ahead of their time, and we are only just beginning to catch up! The Northern Animal Liberation League gathered hundreds of people together to commit mass direct action against vivisection, and inspired thousands to consider the ways that they could directly intervene in the killing of non-humans.
Underground activity for animal liberation in the United States has been low for some time now. The finger gets pointed at the AETA, internet slacktivists, and so on. My opinion is that direct action in the US, and the rhetoric and culture it spawns, has not been inspirational in a very long time. People are ready for something dynamic and exciting, something that is more than angry young people in black masks. Something smart, clever, reproducible by almost anyone, and damaging to the abusers. Something sympathetic and supportable… I don’t know, the time seems ripe. Who is going to spark the fire again? Perhaps it will be you?
Italian animal liberationists taking over a vivisection lab. Amazing stuff.
Before anyone working on the TALON site spent their lives hunting down rare earth and animal lib zines, our time was spent collecting comic books. From the superheros of our youth to the underground treasures discovered in our early 20s, comics have been an influence on our lives and projects.
When we started this site we wanted the visual aspect to reflect this love for graphic literature. With an eye towards mocking the FBI’s portrayal of animal liberation radicals, we wanted images of an animal masked paramilitary organization conspiring to change the world through direct action and digital zine distribution. In this way we figured we could set ourselves apart from other archive sites and have a little fun. The problem? We can’t draw!
Luckily, some very talented artists out there are helping us create the characters that populate TALON’s world. Our first contribution comes from Anthony Sorge, author and artist for the amazing Crust Dogcomics. His rendition of the RABBIT COMMANDOES is, hopefully, just the beginning of our collection of characters for this site.
Got some artistic talent? Want to help us fulfill our comic nerd aspirations while we grow the archive? Please contact us HERE to apply.
GATEWAY TO HELL campaign update and video of action against Vietnam Airlines.
1. AIR FRANCE-KLM UPDATE
2. VIETNAM AIRLINES CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
3. CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
4. CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES CYBER-PROTEST
1. AIR FRANCE-KLM UPDATE:
There remains very little outward movement from Air France at this time,
although there never is any serious external reaction from them because
they’re so insular, but the pressure continues on them with more and
more protests happening against them. They’re very aware of the campaign
but they are also under enormous pressure not to bend so we’re working
on a strategy of isolation to remove the airlines around them and limit
the global supply of primates for the research industry to Air France’s
routes and cargo capacity.
With credible players such as United Airlines, Air Canada and El Al all
imposing formal bans, along with China Eastern’s ban and the steady
reduction in willingness from the industry in general, it’s all pushing
Air France into a difficult and lonely position.
2. VIETNAM AIRLINES CAMPAIGN LAUNCH:
Based on the strategy of isolation for Air France, we recently started
campaigning against Vietnam Airlines with the objective of leaving Air
France as the sole transporters on the South-East Asian routes, which
will at least limit the supply of animals to what Air France’s capacity
can transport.
Vietnam Airlines have already had visits in Paris and London, with
activists in both locations entering the offices to ask questions and
let them know the depth of feeling on this issue. They are in a good
location in London so they will get more protests there, but they’re in
a sensitive location in Paris so it will be more complicated to organise
regular protests there. They also don’t have many other offices globally
where we can reach them soe really need to find activists in the
following cities who can organise protests against them:
Prague, Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, Frankfurt, Toronto, Moscow, London,
San Francisco.
If you can help with protests in any of these locations please either
email me privately or email the campaign and let us know. I’ll share
more information about Vietnam Airlines later but we got a bit
distracted by…
3. CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES CAMPAIGN LAUNCH:
As announced by Jeremy, it seems China Southern Airlines are
transporting primates for the research industry and that makes them a
hugely important target because they’re the final Chinese airline not to
have made a policy. If they stop it will cause serious availabilty
problems for the research industry because they would be limited to Air
France’s cargo capacity.
At the moment China Southern are probably transporting between
1,000-1,200 primates a month, (based on previous figures and their
network capacity), into both Chicago and Paris. They have an office in
Paris and yesterday activists visited them to talk about their primate
transports. A video of the action, (including an earlier visit to
Vietnam Airlines), can be seen here: http://youtu.be/GqyuE4J-4k0
China Southern Airlines has offices in the following locations:
Amsterdam, Auckland, Brisbane, Chicago, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Moscow,
Paris, Sydney
If you can help with protests against China Southern in any of these
locations please either email me privately or email the campaign and let
us know. The first cyber-protest, with the emails provided by Jeremy and
a load more we harvested from their websites, is below.
4. CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES CYBER-PROTEST:
======================================
======================================
Following China Eastern Airlines ban on primate transports imposed last
month, and the subsequent clarification from Hainan Airlines that they
are not transporting primate for the research industry, it has now been
confirmed that China Southern Airlines are the last transporter of
primates destined for the research industry from China to the USA and
Europe. They had tried to hide the fact they were transporting primates, .
We’ve suspected China Southern for a while, because whilst an article in
Nature Magazine suggested they were no longer transporting primates they
have never had a formal policy. We know they were approached at the same
time as Hainan Airlines, and now we have proof that they’re actively
transporting Chinese primates to Europe and the US!
Please email China Southern Airlines to protest their decision to
transport primates for experiments and then share this cyber-action with
your contacts to ask that they contact them too!

SAMPLE LETTER:
======================================
For the attention of China Southern Airlines;
It has come to my attention that your company has made the business
decision to transport primates for the research industry, despite the
fact that Nature Magazine declared that your company had not transported
primates for 6 months since your ground handlers refused to unload the
animals from your planes in Los Angeles. However, it is now clear that
you simply switched to transporting the animals through Chicago and
carried on transporting to Europe as normal.
Animals in laboratories suffer unimaginable cruelty in experiments that
could easily be replaced with more reliable testing methods and by
transporting them you are helping to perpetuate an unreliable, outdated
and extremely controversial science that should have been replaced 30
years ago. China Southern Airlines is now one of only four carriers
still willing to transport primates for the research industry, so I urge
you in the strongest possible terms to join the vast majority of the
airline industry and end your support for this cruel practice.
I simply cannot accept that primates continue to be used in such
meaningless experiments and I assure you that I will do everything in my
power to encourage people not to fly with your airline whilst you
continue to support this cruel practice. There is a very good reason why
so many airlines have banned this practice, and why both El Al and Air
Canada have even fought legal battles for the right to end their
involvement in this evil trade, but now that your airline has been
exposed for transporting primates you can expect the negative PR that
comes with being associated with the primate research industry.
In anticipation of your public response on this issue,
<YOUR_NAME_HERE>

Investigators who filmed and documented the conditions of Finnish pig
farms in 2009 are going to court again next week.
Karry Hedberg and Saila Kivelä are charged with “aggravated defamation”
and “disturbing the peace”.Two other activists are charged with aggravated defamation, for linking to the www.sikatehtaat.fi website.
The prosecutor is demanding prison sentences and the farmers are asking
for almost 200 000 euros compensation. Most of the charges were dropped
during the first trial (in 2011), but the case is at the court of
appeals next week, on 16.-17.4.2013.
You can show your support to the defendants by taking a picture of
yourself with this sign:

I like Animal Equality as an organization.
Critiquing one of their campaigns is not the same as denouncing them as a whole. I hope this dog meat campaign is just a mis-step and that they will get back on track really soon, because in general I appreciate their approach.
I offered my opinion (and twitter comments!) because I care about the direction they take, and would like to see all animal liberation groups be sensitive around issues of race. We should allow participants in a particular culture to take the lead in making changes to that culture. There are Chinese animal rights groups already working on these issues, if westerners want to be involved it should be solely in a support role in my opinion, and then only when that support is requested. This way our opposition can not paint our activism as another attempt at cultural imperialism and racism. That seems to be the best thing for us to do as ethical vegans, and the best path to liberation for animals.
Finally, as predicted, racist comments have already been popping up in response to this campaign, and I hope that AE take the necessary steps to challenge that racism. You start the fire, you put it out…
