“Some facts about the recent feds’ visits:
- They flashed a lot of resources. The feds appeared simultaneously in 3 or 4 cities (Portland, Olympia and Seattle, and probably Vancouver) as well as some rural places around the region. They appeared in groups as large as 6-8.
- They visited around 10 houses in Olympia, and several other locations for a total of perhaps 20 contacts in Olympia. They visited at least one but reportedly as many as 3 different homeless youth service organizations in Seattle, in addition to an anarchist bookstore. They harassed a handful of people in Seattle quite intensely. Several people in Portland were visited, and reports suggest some people in Vancouver, BC were visited.
- At one house, the feds knocked and someone answered the door. Once the door was open, the feds muscled their way into the house, intimidating residents and asking questions.
- The US Marshals are involved. Marshals track, arrest, and transport people. They also serve subpoenas, and had served at least one subpoena last year related to May Day 2012.
- The scope of their contacts has greatly increased. They are not focused on anarchists and activists: now they target artists, hipsters, and show spaces.
- They showed lists of names and series of photos. They said things along the lines of, “Here is a photo of someone unmasked. Here is a photo of someone masked up. Is it the same person? What is their name?”

In 2004, U.S. Attorney Chris Christie indicted six animal rights activists for violations of an obscure law known as the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. The accused were, in every instance, only charged for speech activity but an anonymous jury found all six to be guilty. Josh Harper will examine the corporate interests behind this prosecution and what it means for protests movements in the United States. Josh Harper is a former political prisoner, longtime activist, and movement archivist.

Hey folks, just a reminder that I do speaking dates about all sorts of radical stuff, and I am so good at it that it got me sent to prison! (Clearly someone was threatened.) If you’d like to book me to speak on government repression of resistance movements, the history of animal liberation as a revolutionary practice, how a decline in wilderness generally precipitates a decline in human freedom, etc, etc, please get in touch. I’m hoping to do a lot of college dates next year, but also am psyched to speak at radical bookstores and community spaces.
Which war, exactly?
I see so much militant posturing on tumblr, and it angers me. “This war has two sides,” “Let’s be honest; lets make war,” “The class war is coming.” You know what? I call bullshit.
Not one person on tumblr talking this nonsense has ever shot someone, been shot, starved in a culvert because they got separated from their guerrilla unit, shit their pants because the mortars falling around them are getting closer, been water boarded, or faced the terror of putting a bullet through another scared, young soldier. You want to talk about war because it makes you look tough, but it also does something else. it removes the seriousness from the term. This is why it seems so trite when we talk about revolution - because kids make it look like something that is more about cool imagery than the hard, risky, deadly business of actually getting it done.
All I ask from people is honesty, and we all know that if the honest truth is if you plan on taking up arms, you aren’t going to be talking about it on the fucking internet. There is a value to sharing our history, to discussing revolution, to speaking with zeal- but all of this can be done without diminishing the reality of war, of revolution, and our shared struggles.
Most of the people you will meet in life who talk a good game will be the biggest cowards when it comes to fighting. The kids on tumblr who post the most images of burning cop cars are going to be the same ones talking to the cops when shit goes down. I’ve seen this over and over again. The real revolutionaries, the ones who want to fight rather than draw attention to themselves, just quietly get the job done.
In closing, I want to say that one of the reasons this burns me so bad is because these were the mistakes I made when I was younger too, the mistakes that put me on the FBI radar and eventually in prison. I want to see some progress before I die, I want to believe that we still have a chance to fight and win. Every time I see commentary on here about “making total destroy” from someone who won’t even “make total breakfast” it pisses me off beyond measure. Stop your posturing. If you want to be down, show us, don’t tell us.

A revolutionary love for our comrades sometimes means criticism and debate, and in this case I think we reached an end result everyone can be happy about. TALON is going to be an incredible archive and news source. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds in the months ahead.

I wanted to thank everyone who came out to see me speak at Burning Books last night, (Except for the racist guy, the men’s rights activist, and the attorney who helped sink the SHAC 7 at trial.) it was wonderful to meet everyone and to see the community that has been built up around that awesome book store. I can’t tell you how nice it was to see anarchists, socialists, animal liberationists, environmentalists, trade unionists and even old school liberal lefties all hanging out and discussing how to cast off this murderous government. The distinct lack of more-radical-than-thou bullshit was refreshing.
You know what else was nice? Seeing Leslie James Pickering above for the first time in more than a decade. We both got active around the same time in 1995, and my first arrest was with him and other members of LibCo. So many people from that era have dropped out, given up, or bought in. LJ is still a radical, and radiates the determination and revolutionary love we’re going to need in the difficult days ahead. All in all, it was a wonderful night.
